Gorky's "automatic" description of the The Liver is the Coxcomb is included below the reproduction of the painting, p. 120: "The song of a cardinal, liver, mirrors that have not caught reflection, the aggressively heraldic branches, the saliva of the hungry man whose face is painted with white chalk."
