Commentary

The painting was discovered in 2010 beneath another canvas, Pastoral (P347), titled and dated to 1947 by Gorky. The artist had mounted both canvases onto the same stretcher, which they shared for over sixty years until their separation in 2010. The title is catalogued here in accordance with the historical appellation by which it is best known, namely, Pastoral.
