Artist’s Ephemera

Reproduction
Ephemera 96

Paolo Uccello
Miracolo dell’Ostia Profanata (Miracle of the Desecrated Host) (Detail of Predella Panels Three and Four)
1467–1468
Tempera on six-part panel

Notes

The reproduction was printed by the photographic firm Fratelli Alinari, which was established in Florence in 1852 and initially specialized in reproductions of Italian art and architecture.

The complete predella is in the collection of the Galleria Nazionale Delle Marche, Urbino, Italy (DE 231). It was originally created for the now-demolished Church of Santa Maria di Pian di Mercato in Urbino, Italy.

Commentary

In 1933, Gorky proposed a mural design for the Public Works of Art Project (PWAP) titled 1934. The imagery for the ultimately unrealized mural is largely derived from the artist's "Nighttime, Enigma, and Nostalgia" series (see related theme). In combining various elements from the series, Gorky borrows the compositional structure of Uccello's six-part predella (see D0192D0194, and D1531).
